Etsuko Nakatsuji (b. 1937,Osaka) began her career as a graphic designer and held her first solo exhibition in 1963 at Tokyo Gallery. Since then, she has presented numerous solo exhibitions in Japan and internationally.
Throughout her practice, Nakatsuji has consistently explored the motif of the human form, guided by the idea that "the human form is mysterious." Her work reflects an awareness of the limits of human form, and she has developed a body of work across painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Through these diverse media, she evokes intangible aspects of existence such as memory, presence, and inner sensation with a quiet and poetic sensibility.
In recent years, her work has deepened to engage with universal questions—where humans come from and where they are going—suggesting a contemplative inquiry into the nature of existence.
Nakatsuji has received major international recognition, including the Grand Prize at the Contemporary Print Competition in 1998 and the Grand Prix at the Bratislava Illustration Biennial in 1999. |
